Bond has become a British institution, recognised around the world, and the long-running spy film series all started 60 years ago. The creation of Ian Fleming, he started writing the first Bond novel 70 years ago. From Connery in “The Frightened City” to the most recent actor to play the spy, Daniel Craig CMG, take a look at this article in homage to 60 years of Bond.
100 years of the BBC & 40 years of Channel 4
2022 marks 100 years of the BBC, when the British Broadcasting Company, as the BBC was initially named, was created on the 18th of October 1922 by a group of radio wireless makers. They began regular daily radio broadcasts from London station 2LO on the 14th of November 1922. Plus Channel 4 launched 40 years ago on the 2nd of November 1982.

2022 marks 100 years of the Irish Free State & 85 years since the 1937 Constitution for the Republic of Ireland. Irish Film

2022 marks 145 years since the first ever championships took place in Wimbledon, London, and 100 years since the tennis club’s current location in SW19.

2022 marks 295 years since the first written rules of cricket; 250 years of first class cricket; 235 years since the MCC was founded & the first match at Thomas Lord’s Cricket Ground; 145 years since the first ever test match; & 140 years since the first test to reclaim the ashes.
55 years of the Queen’s Postage Stamp
The iconic image of The Queen’s head in profile on British postage stamps was launched 55 years ago by Royal Mail based on a bas-relief sculpture by artist Arnold Machin. From stamps to money, The Queen‘s silhouette has been a unifying symbol of the United Kingdom, the country’s logo.
The Platinum Jubilee – 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II
2022 marked 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign with Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place around the country. Yet again, the highlight of the jubilee was The Queen herself, taking afternoon tea with Paddington Bear and clearly moved by the crowd on her final balcony appearance.
House of Windsor 105th anniversary
2022 marks 105 years of the Royal House of Windsor. In response to anti-German sentiment following the First World War, on the 17th of July 1917, a royal proclamation issued by George V declared that the British Royal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha would henceforth be styled and called Windsor.
320 years since Queen Anne’s accession
320 years ago, Queen Anne acceded to the throne upon the death of William III.
55 years of Queen Elizabeth Hall
The Queen officially opened the new Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank in 1967.
45 years of the NT
45 years ago, the first production opened in the Cottesloe (now called the Dorfman) at the National Theatre, an 8½ hour epic called “Illuminatus!” by Ken Campbell.
100 years since the discover of King Tut’s Tomb
100 years ago, archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the entrance to Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
150 years first cup final & first international
150 years ago, the first ever cup final took place, with Wanderers FC beating Royal Engineers AFC 1-0 at the Oval, and the first-ever international football match took place – in Glasgow – between Scotland & England.

Charles Dodgson, A.K.A. Lewis Carroll, the author of the classic adventures of Alice (in Wonderland and through the Looking Glass) was born 190 years ago on the 27th of January.

60 years ago, Washington D.C.’s Dulles Airport, designed by Eero Saarinen, was officially opened.

On the 15th of May in 1942, the Ealing Studios film “The Next of Kin”, with Mervyn Johns, Jack Hawkins, Basil Radford & Naunton Wayne, opened at the Pavilion Cinema in London.
Brighton Rock 75
75 years ago, on the 25th of November 1947, the British film noir classic “Brighton Rock” had its first screening to the trade & cinema distributors.
Hue & Cry 75
Regarded as the first of the classic Ealing comedies, “Hue & Cry” starring Alastair Sim premiered at the Tivoli Cinema on The Strand in London 75 years ago on the 23rd of February 1947.
Secret People 70
70 years ago, “Secret People” premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square, London. Directed by Thorold Dickinson, he cast Audrey Hepburn in her first main film role & went on to film her (successful) screen test for “Roman Holiday”.
The Gentle Gunman 70
70 years ago, Ealing drama “The Gentle Gunman”, starring Dirk Bogarde & Elizabeth Sellars (with Eddie Byrne, Joseph Tomelty, Liam Redmond, Michael Golden, & Jack MacGowran) opened at the Odeon Marble Arch in London.
Trent’s Last Case 70
70 years ago, “Trent’s Last Case” (starring Margaret Lockwood & Orson Welles, with Sam Kydd & Kenneth Williams), premiered at the Plaza Cinema in London.
65 years of Hammer
On the 2nd of May 1957, Hammer films released the first of many colour horror films (“The Curse of Frankenstein”) for which the company would become famous. 65 years ago, Hammer began their prolific output of horrors in vivid colour, such as “Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb”, “Scars of Dracula”, & “Horror of Frankenstein”.
Jailhouse Rock 65
65 years ago, on November the 8th, “Jailhouse Rock”, starring the King of Rock & Roll, opened in American cinemas nationwide. The image of the cellmates dancing to the classic song, with the King in his striped prison uniform, still resonates to this day. 2022 also marks 45 years since Presley’s passing.
Woman in a Dressing Gown 65
65 years ago, on the 3rd of October 1957, J. Lee Thompson’s drama “Woman in a Dressing Gown”, starring Yvonne Mitchell, Sylvia Syms, & Carole Lesley, held its London Premiere at the Warner Cinema. The social realism tackled by the film is considered a prototype of the kitchen-sink dramas that would emerge in the early 60s.
These Dangerous Years 65
65 years ago, “These Dangerous Years” with Carole Lesley & George Baker (and an early appearance of a young David McCallum) held its world premiere on the 24th of June 1957 at Liverpool’s Forum, followed by a Gala Premiere at London’s Rialto on the 3rd of July 1957.
The Man in the Sky 65
65 years ago, on January the 14th, the Ealing thriller “The Man in the Sky”, starring Jack Hawkins & Elizabeth Sellars, premiered at the Empire cinema in London.
Only Two Can Play 60
In 1962, the Welsh film “Only Two Can Play” (starring Peter Sellers, with Richard Attenborough, Meredith Edwards, Sheila Manahan & Kenneth Griffith), filmed in & around Swansea, opened at London’s Columbia & Odeon Marble Arch cinemas.
A Kind of Loving 60
60 years ago, the classic British new wave kitchen-sink drama “A Kind of Loving” starring Alan Bates opened at the Warner cinema in London.
The L-Shaped Room 60
60 years ago, the British kitchen-sink drama “The L-Shaped Room” starring Leslie Caron premiered at the Columbia cinema in London.
Tommy Steele Story 65
65 years ago, on the 20th of June, “The Tommy Steele Story”, produced by Carry On‘s Peter Rogers & featuring Tommy Steele in his film debut, opened at the Berkeley Cinema, W1, London.
Barnacle Bill 65
65 years ago, the charming Ealing comedy “Barnacle Bill”, starring Alec Guinness & Jackie Collins, held its Gala Performance at the Empire Cinema in London.
Our Miss Fred 50
50 years ago, “Our Miss Fred”, starring drag icon Danny La Rue, premiered at the ABC cinema on London’s Shaftesbury Avenue.
Ooh… You Are Awful 50
50 years ago, the Dick Emery comedy “Ooh… You are Awful” opened at the Astoria & Metropole Cinemas in London.
Carry On Cruising 60
60 years ago, the nautical comedy “Carry on Cruising” was released in British cinemas. It was the first Carry On film in colour, all filmed at Pinewood apart from some stock footage of a P&O ship (most probably the SS Oronsay).
Up The Front 50
50 years ago, on the 3rd of July 1952, “Up the Front”, the third follow-up film after “Up Pompeii” & “Up the Chastity Belt”, starring Frankie Howerd with Stanley Holloway & Madeline Smith, opened at the Coventry Theatre cinema.
Filming The Wicker Man 50th
50 years ago, the British cult film started filming in Scotland. Christopher Lee considered it to be his best work and the film’s longevity is testament to Anthony Shaffer’s great screenplay & Robin Hardy’s direction – the final shot alone is cinematic perfection.
Steptoe & Son film 50
50 years ago, on the 23rd of March, the “Steptoe & Son” film, starring Harry H. Corbett & Wilfrid Brambell, opened at the ABC Edgware & Fulham Road cinemas in London.
Are You Being Served? film 45
45 years ago, the “Are You Being Served?” film, where the Grace Bros team jet off to Costa Plonka, opened in British cinemas.
Britannia Hospital 40
40 years ago, the Lindsay Anderson film “Britannia Hospital”, starring Leonard Rossiter, Fulton Mackay, Graham Crowden, & Alan Bates, was released in British cinemas.
Putting Pants on Philip 95
95 years ago, “Putting Pants on Philip” was released, billed as the first “official” film as the team of Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.
Star Wars 45
45 years ago, “Star Wars” was released in American cinemas, starring a host of British & Irish acting talent. Filmed at Elstree, Sir Alec Guinness portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi, David Prowse embodied Darth Vader (pictured above revisiting Elstree in 2017, his final public engagement), and Eddie Byrne as the Rebel general Vanden Willard.
Casino Royale 55
55 years ago, the Royal premiere of the Bond-spoof “Casino Royale” took place in London. The cast includes Peter Sellers, David Niven, Orson Welles, David Prowse, Ronnie Corbett, & Caroline Munro, plus Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass‘ iconic music.
Blue Murder at St. Trinian’s 65
On the 19th of December 1957, the second St Trinian’s film “Blue Murder at St. Trinian’s”, with Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell, Terry-Thomas, & glamour model Sabrina, opened at the Gaumont Haymarket cinema in London.
Billion Dollar Brain 55
Starring Michael Caine in his third outing as spy Harry Palmer, “Billion Dollar Brain” opened in American cinemas on the 20th of December 1967. artandhue.com/spies
The Saint 60th
60 years ago, the suave & debonair Simon Templar glided onto British TV screens when “The Saint” debuted in 1962. Audiences were treated to the natural charm of Roger Moore in the show that ran until 1969, second only to “The Avengers” in the amount of episodes. “The Saint” debuted on the 30th of September 1962 on ITV stations Associated Rediffusion, Anglia, South Wales & West, Westward & Southern at 7.28pm (after the news). ATV Midland aired the episode later on the 4th of October 1962.
Callan 55th
55 years ago, TV screens in 1967 saw the launch of a new spy series starring Edward Woodward as Callan. Darker & grittier than other fictional spies, the TV series came to an end in 1972, 50 years ago. Lauded for “The Wicker Man”, it’s “Callan” where audiences were first captivated by the actor.
The Prisoner 55th
Despite having just 17 episodes, the impact of “The Prisoner” was phenomenal when it initially aired 55 years ago and continues to have a profound affect on subsequent television shows that reference the stylish blend of surrealism, cryptic sci-fi, and psychological mystery.
Colour Avengers 55 years ago
In 1967, The Avengers series started broadcasting in colour (for those with colour TVs) & Emma Peel handed the spying baton to Tara King on set. Whilst Diana Rigg’s departure upset devotees of Mrs Peel, Linda Thorson secured her own fans who fell for the resourceful novice spy.
55 years of Colour TV
55 years ago, the colour was switched on for the first time in Great Britain, literally and metaphorically. The BBC broadcast the first colour pictures in July 1967 & society at large, and the British cultural landscape, seemed more colourful when homosexuality was decriminalised on July 27th 1967.
45 year since Space: 1999
45 years ago, the final episode of “Space: 1999” called “The Dorcons”, aired on British TV for the first time on LWT. The show starred real-life couple Martin Landau & Barbara Bain, who had previously acted together in “Mission: Impossible”.
Are You Being Served? 50th
50 years ago, the pilot episode of “Are You Being Served?“, with Mollie Sugden & John Inman, aired on British television as part of Comedy Playhouse.
“Pebble Mill at One” 50th
50 years ago, “Pebble Mill at One” was first broadcast from Birmingham’s newly-opened Pebble Mill studios in Edgbaston.
LWT London Tower 50th
50 years ago, the LWT south bank London Studios were officially opened by the Duke of Kent (hence the tower’s name of Kent House).
Target 45th
45 years ago, the first ever episode of “Target” starring Patrick Mower aired on British television.
Robin’s Nest 45th
45 years ago, the first episode of “Robin’s Nest”, the spin-off sitcom from “Man about the House” starring Richard O’Sullivan, debuted on British TV. The show guest-starred both Honor Blackman & Barbara Murray as Robin Tripp’s mother-in-law.
Steptoe & Son 60th
60 years ago, the first ever episode of “Steptoe & Son” with Harry H. Corbett & Wilfrid Brambell, called “The Offer”, aired on British TV.
TV Hancock 66th
66 years ago, the first television episode of “Hancock‘s Half Hour” aired with the episode called, appropriately enough, “The First TV Show”, with Sid James & Irene Handl.
The Professionals 45th
45 years ago, the first ever episode of “The Professionals” was broadcast on British TV when “Private Madness Public Danger” introduced us to CI5.
Granada 66th
66 years ago, Granada studios went on air for the first time with its launch programme at 7.30pm called “Meet the People”.
French & Saunders 35th
35 years ago, the first ever episode of “French & Saunders“, with Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders, aired on TV.
Absolutely Fabulous 30th
30 years ago, Edwina/Edina Monsoon (played by Jennifer Saunders) & Patsy Stone (played by Joanna Lumley) made their TV debut, in the very first episode of “Absolutely Fabulous” (called “Fashion”) with June Whitfield.

I am a Camera
The newly-restored version of the risqué comedy drama, “I am a Camera”, starring Laurence Harvey, is available to own on Blu-Ray for the very first time, based on both the 1945 novel, ‘The Berlin Stories’ by Christopher Isherwood and the subsequent play which was developed into the iconic musical “Cabaret”.
Frieda
Made by Ealing Studios and starring Mai Zetterling, Glynis Johns, & Gladys Henson, “Frieda” sees a German girl help an English prisoner-of-war escape and in return he marries her, now available on Blu-ray & DVD.
The Divided Heart
Now available on Blu-ray & DVD, this heart-breaking drama between two women that both call Toni their son is based on a true story of a child separated by war. Starring Yvonne MItchell, who won a BAFTA for her performance in the film, with Eddie Byrne & Liam Redmond,
Gift Horse
A fictional account of fhe real-life St Nazaire Raid of 1942 AKA Operation Chariot – led by a ship very similar to the “Gift Horse” itself, and celebrated as The Greatest Raid of All. The film, now available on Blu-ray & DVD, stars Trevor Howard & Richard Attenborough, with Dora Bryan, Sid James, Meredith Edwards, & Glyn Houston.
The Ladykillers Reissue
Initially released in 2020, the restored Blu-ray of the classic Ealing comedy “The Ladykillers” is getting a re-print. The Collector’s Edition includes six art cards by Art & Hue in colours exclusive to the set.
Raw Deal
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the new 4k restoration of “Raw Deal” is now available on Blu-ray. Arnie’s plays a disgraced FBI agent tasked with infiltrating a crime gang.
The Driver
This highly influential film, starring Ryan O’Neal as the eponymous driver of fast getaway cars, the best “Wheel Man” for hire, has undergone a spectacular 4k Blu-ray restoration.
Highlander
There can only be one. Starring French actor Christopher Lambert as a Scotsman, and Scottish actor Sean Connery as an Egyptian, this first cult “Highlander” film spawned a series. The restoration is available to pre-order on 4K UHD Blu-ray.
Endless Night
Starring Hywel Bennett & Britt Ekland, with Windsor Davies, Hayley Mills & Lois Maxwell, this adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Endless Night”, originally released 50 years ago, is now available to order on Blu-ray & DVD.
Hoffman
Now available on Blu-ray & DVD, Sinéad Cusack’s first leading film role was in “Hoffmann” with Peter Sellers as a not-particularly likeable character (so much so that he apparently tried to make the film disappear), but Sinéad’s ingénue finds her inner strength to handle the situation.
Spanish Fly
The ultimate bounders & cads Terry-Thomas & Leslie Phillips partner up in the saucy Seventies romp “Spanish Fly”, now available on Blu-ray & DVD. Filmed in Menorca, keep an eye out for the spectacular cliff bar.
25 Years: Impressions
Made to mark THe Queen’s Silver Jubilee, this 1977 documentary about Queen Elizabeth II was released in this Platinum Jubliee year and is available to order on Blu-ray & DVD.

Space: 1999 Box-set
The complete box-set of the cult 70s sci-fi show “Space: 1999” was released on Blu-ray & DVD this year, starring real-life couple Martin Landau & Barbara Bain of “Mission: Impossible” fame.
Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.
The iconic Daleks, created by Terry Nation, had two big screen outings in the 1960s, both now available on Blu-ray & DVD. The second film sees Peter Cushing joined by Bernard Cribbins, Andrew Keir, & Philip Madoc.
Kind Hearts & Coronets reprint
Regarded by many as one of the best films of all time, the Blu-ray & DVD of classic Ealing comedy “Kind Hearts & Coronets” stars Alec Guinness, Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, & Valerie Hobson. This 1949 masterpiece was originally restored in 2019 and is now getting a re-print.

R.I.P. Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II
The longest-reigning monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth II died in September this year.
Born into a life of duty, The Queen devoted her being to the country and she will be sorely missed.
Ronnie Spector R.I.P.
The lead singer of the iconic girl group The Ronettes died in January at the age of 78. “Be My Baby” was the first song released by The Ronettes and has become widely regarded to be one of the best songs ever produced.
Monica Vitti R.I.P.
The iconic Italian actress Monica Vitti died in February at the age of 90. Known as the Queen of Italian cinema, she also starred in English-speaking productions including the cult camp spy-fi romp “Modesty Blaise”.
Anna Karen R.I.P.
Anna Karen, the actress famous as Olive from “On the Buses“, tragically died in February at the age of 85. As well as “On the Buses”, Anna was known for appearing in a couple of Carry On films & in “Eastenders” with her good friend Barbara Windsor.
June Brown R.I.P.
Awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours List, June Brown OBE died in April at the age of 95. As Dot in Eastenders, June was nominated for a BAFTA for the first & only soap single-hander to date.
Dennis Waterman R.I.P.
Dennis Waterman left us in May at the age of 74. Starting as a child actor, Waterman starred in films including Hammer’s “Scars of Dracula” before becoming a mainstay of British TV with “The Sweeney” & “Minder” to name just a couple of his iconic shows.
John Bates R.I.P.
The legendary fashion designer John Bates passed away at the age of 83 in June. Credited with inventing the mini-skirt, Bates created a wonderful op-art collection under the Jean Varon label for Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel. From leather catsuits to graphic dresses, the collection featured pieces and accessories that perfectly complemented Emma Peel’s modernity and independence.
Bernard Cribbins R.I.P.
Bernard Cribbins OBE died in July at the age of 93. Bernard was a mainstay of British film & television (including “The Railway Children”, Carry On films “Carry On Spying” & “Carry On Jack“, & The Avengers), and a major part of childhoods across generations.
Leslie Phillips R.I.P.
Leslie Phillips CBE died in November at the grand age of 98. A unique actor, who intoned the simple greeting of “Hello” with more lasciviousness that it warrants, Phillips starred in three classic Carry On films, as well as Ealing films “The Proud Valley“, “Pool of London” & “Train of Events”, and partnered with fellow cad Terry-Thomas for “Spanish Fly”.
Pelé R.I.P.
The legendary footballer Pelé died at the age of 82 in December. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, he coined the phrase “the beautiful game” and is the only football player to have won the World Cup a record three times.

Director & actor Peter Bogdanovich; Scottish actor George Rossi who appeared in the film “Comfort & Joy“; the trailblazing Academy-award winning actor Sidney Poitier; “Grange Hill” actor Nicholas Donnelly who appeared in the first Carry On film “Carry On Sergeant” as well as “Taxi!” with Sid James, “The Saint“, “Dixon of Dock Green” with Jack Warner, “The Professionals“, and “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” with David Niven;
