Caravaggio

2021 marks 450 years since the birth of the rock star painter Caravaggio

Art & Hue has remixed Caravaggio’s paintings into colourful pop art icons to create this collection of stylish prints, available in three sizes & many colour options.

Born 450 years ago on the 29th of September 1571, Caravaggio reinvented painting with his dramatic contrasts between light and dark.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio spotlighted key figures in his work, and plunged others into the shadows (oscuro), with his progression of “chiaroscuro” into “tenebrism”.

Caravaggio’s life may have been short, he died at the age of 38, and tempestuous, possibly brought on by lead poisoning from the paints of that era, but his work reinvented painting at the time, and endures and inspires to this day.

His work influenced Ribera, Bernini, Vermeer, La Tour and Rembrandt, to name a few, and impacted the baroque era. Related artists were christened the Caravaggisti, tenebrists, or tenebrosi (“shadowists”).

As the art historian Bernard Berenson noted, “with the exception of Michelangelo, no other Italian painter exercised so great an influence”.

Derek Jarman’s 1986 film (starring Tilda Swinton & Sean Bean in their first ever film alongside Nigel Terry, Dexter Fletcher, Michael Gough, & Nigel Davenport) introduced the artist to a whole new audience.

Exclusively by Art & Hue, this collection of Caravaggio pop art prints comes in 3 sizes & 30 colour options, all on 310gsm museum-quality archival card, made from 100% cotton, with fine-art pigment inks for longevity.
