Billy Liar in 4k UHD: Collector’s Edition Giveaway!

Studiocanal has restored the classic British New Wave film “Billy Liar” in 4k UHD to be released on the 3rd of August, available for pre-order now.

The seminal 1963 film stars Tom Courtenay and is still revered and referenced after all these years. “Billy Liar” created its own classification, blending realism with fantasy, and helped launch the actress Julie Christie into the stratosphere as the face of the Sixties. Directed by John Schlesinger, the influential film has inspired many, including Art & Hue with the “Billy Liar” collection of pop art prints.

What makes “Billy Liar” such an important film? It’s considered one of the most significant films in British cinema, the final film of the British New Wave when it was released in 1963, which subverted the social realist and kitchen sink genres with its use of fantasy sequences and documentary-style location shooting.

Available to pre-order now, the Collector’s Edition of the 4k UHD restoration comes with a new 64-page booklet about the film, a poster, and a calendar by Billy’s employer Shadrack & Duxbury.

Directed by John Schlesinger, based on Keith Waterhouse’s novel & screenplay with Willis Hall, the film stars Tom Courtenay with an outstanding supporting cast including Julie Christie, Helen Fraser, Gwendolyn Watts, George Innes, Leonard Rossiter, Rodney Bewes, Wilfred Pickles & Mona Washbourne.

Filmed in Bradford, the film contrasts its kitchen-sink setting with fantasy sequences of Billy’s daydreams. Billy Fisher is a young man in Yorkshire who harbours ambitions to become a successful writer in London, escaping his mundane reality through his dream sequences in the fictional land of Ambrosia.

Triple Julie Christie stylish pop art print by Art & Hue
Julie Christie’s breakthrough role in Billy Liar

Strong, independent and self-assured, Julie Christie‘s breakthrough role as Liz helped to redefine female characters, considered to be an inspiration for many women to challenge stereotypical gender roles.

Liz overthrows previous gender expectations – she is liberated and an equal to Billy, if not superior as she’s confident, ambitious, and isn’t hampered by his plaintive indecisiveness.

The film’s themes of social mobility struck a chord with audiences in 1963, particularly the post-war generation of British youth, who questioned traditional values and sought greater freedom and self-expression. The film was revolutionary as well as influential, and still appears on many lists of top British films of all time.

When it was released, premiering at the Warner Cinema in London on the 15th of August 1963, “Billy Liar” reflected the changing cultural and social landscape of Britain in the early 1960s and its influence can still be seen in contemporary cinema and television today.

Taking inspiration from the original poster and press book artworks as a starting point, Art & Hue had the pleasure to delve into the archives of Billy Liar to create a collection of stylish pop art prints related to the film, all available in three sizes and many colour options, online here.

The special 4k UHD collector’s Edition of the film will be released on the 3rd of August. The 2-disc set features the film on both UHD and Blu-ray with brand-new extras, a 64-page booklet, poster and calendar and will be the first time the film is available to own in 4k.

The World Premiere of the new restoration will take place at Cinema Rediscovered in Bristol on the 26th of July at 12:50pm. The film will be introduced on the day by Alice Lowe and tickets are currently available online here.

The film will also be screened at selected cinemas from the 31st of July onwards – so check your local listings – and will form a major highlight of the ongoing UK-wide centenary project, The Consummate Professional: John Schlesinger at 100.

Retrospectives of Schlesinger’s films will feature as part of the regular Curzon Film Club strand across all Curzon cinema sites, culminating in screenings of “Billy Liar” in August. For more information, visit the curzon.com/film-club site.

Widely regarded as one of the most memorable and universally acclaimed films of the 60s, this new restoration is the perfect way to revisit some of the best work carried out by one of Britain’s most cherished directors in his centennial year.

Billy Liar programme 1960 Cambridge Theatre

Billy Liar: from stage to screen

Keith Waterhouse adapted his novel into a stageplay with Willis Hall. Opening at the Cambridge Theatre on the 13th of September 1960, the production starred Albert Finney as Billy, with Tom Courtenay as understudy, along with Mona Washbourne (who also appeared in the film version), Jennifer Jayne (who went on to appear in “They Came From Beyond Space“), Ann Beach & Trevor Bannister (later of “Are You Being Served?” fame).

The play was directed by Lindsay Anderson who went on to direct films including “This Sporting Life” with Richard Harris & Rachel Roberts, “if…” with Richard Warwick, and “Britannia Hospital” with Leonard Rossiter, Graham Crowden, Fulton Mackay, Alan Bates, & T.P. McKenna.

When the screen rights to the play were purchased and it came time to make the film, the producers decided to engage John Schlesinger to helm the production as director.

Co-financed by Nat Cohen of Anglo-Amalgamated (the producers and distributors of the first 12 Carry On films), the film’s main producer was Joseph Janni who had previously produced the kitchen-sink British New Wave film “A Kind of Loving” with Alan Bates & James Bolam, and went on to make “Darling” with Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde & Laurence Harvey, the camp spy-fi “Modesty Blaise” with Monica Vitti, Terence Stamp & Dirk Bogarde, “Far from the Madding Crowd”, “Poor Cow”, and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” with Peter Finch, June Brown & Bessie Love.
