To mark 85 years of the airline BOAC and 70 years of the jet-set Ealing film, Art & Hue presents Out of the Clouds, a new collection of stylish pop art inspired by the golden age of air travel.
Opening at the Leicester Square Theatre in London on the 10th of February 1955, Out of the Clouds is a charming snapshot of an era when flying was a glamourous affair.
The aviation film “Out of the Clouds”, about the lives of airline crew and their passengers, stars James Robertson Justice, Eunice Gayson, Anthony Steel, Robert Beatty, David Knight, Margo Lorenz & Melissa Stribling.
Produced by Ealing Studios’ head Michael Balcon, and directed by Basil Dearden from a screenplay by John Eldridge & Michael Relph, the cast also includes Fiona Clyne, Sid James, Jill Melford and Katie Johnson.
The Ealing Studios production filmed on location at “London Airport” which later expanded to became Heathrow.
Many more Ealing films were to follow including “Champagne Charlie” with Tommy Trinder & Stanley Holloway, “Stop Press Girl” with Basil Radford & Naunton Wayne, “Pool of London” with Earl Cameron & Moira Lister, and “Out of the Clouds”. James Robertson Justice appeared in the classic Ealing comedies “Whisky Galore!” and, using the pseudonym of Seumas Mor na Fesag, in “The Magnet” with James Fox (billed as William).
A string of Doctor films saw him portray the frightening Sir Lancelot Spratt in “Doctor in the House” with Dirk Bogarde, “Doctor at Sea” with Noel Purcell & Joan Sims, “Doctor at Large” with Shirley Eaton, “Doctor in Love” with Carole Lesley & Liz Fraser, “Doctor in Distress” with Barbara Murray & Dennis Price, “Doctor in Clover” with John Fraser & Fenella Fielding, and “Doctor in Trouble” with Harry Secombe & Irene Handl. Directed by Ralph Thomas (the brother of Gerald Thomas who directed the Carry On films) and produced by Betty E. Box (the wife of Peter Rogers who produced the Carry On films), the pair made many films together including “Percy” with Britt Ekland, Antonia Ellis, Patrick Mower, Graham Crowden, Pauline Delaney, T.P. McKenna & George Best, “Percy’s Progress” with Leigh Lawson, Harry H. Corbett, Jenny Hanley & Carol Hawkins, and “The Love Ban” with Hywel Bennett, Madeline Smith & Milo O’Shea, to name just a few.
James Robertson Justice appeared in many other films throughout his busy career including “The Sword & the Rose” in which he portrayed Henry VIII alongside Richard Todd & Glynis Johns, “Miss Robin Hood” with Margaret Rutherford, “Land of the Pharaohs” with Jack Hawkins & Joan Collins, “An Alligator named Daisy” with Diana Dors, “Moby Dick” with Gregory Peck, “The Iron Petticoat” with Katherine Hepburn, “Storm over the Nile” with Anthony Steel, Laurence Harvey, Mary Ure & Ronald Lewis, “Campbell’s Kingdom” with John Laurie, “A French Mistress” with Cecil Parker, Ian Bannen & Kenneth Griffith, “The Guns of Navarone” with David Niven & Richard Harris, “Crooks Anonymous” and “The Fast Lady”, both with Stanley Baxter & Julie Christie, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” with Dick Van Dyke & Benny Hill, to name a few credits.
