The Magnet poster by Art & Hue

Starring James Fox in his first starring role, billed as his birth name William Fox, “The Magnet” seeks to tap in to the charm of “Hue & Cry” in this story of a young boy and a magnet.

The poignant moral tale, which also stars Stephen Murray, Kay Walsh, Meredith Edwards, Gladys Henson and Sam Kydd, opened at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on the 19th of October 1950.

Filmed in and around Cheshire & Liverpool, James Robertson Justice makes a cameo appearance in the film as a tramp but billed under the pseudonym Seumas Mor na Fesag.

As a child actor, James Fox also appeared in “The Miniver Story” with Cathy O’Donnell ahead of his starring role in “The Magnet”.

Fox went on to appear in “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner” with Tom Courtenay & Michael Redgrave, “The Servant” with Dirk Bogarde, for which Fox won the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer, “Tamahine” with Nancy Kwan, John Fraser & Dennis Price, “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines” with Terry-Thomas, Tony Hancock & Benny Hill, “Duffy” with James Coburn, “The Chase” with Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda & Robert Redford, “Isadora” with Vanessa Redgrave & Bessie Love, and “Performance” with Mick Jagger & Anita Pallenberg.

Later credits include “The Whistle Blower” with Michael Caine & Gordon Jackson, “The Russia House” with Sean Connery, “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” with Christopher Lee, “Wide Blue Yonder” with Lauren Bacall, “Cleanskin” with Charlotte Rampling, “Effie Gray” with Julie Walters & Claudia Cardinale, and “Downton Abbey” with Maggie Smith.

Art & Hue had the pleasure to delve into the archives of the Ealing Comedies to create a new collection of stylish pop art prints related to the films, all available in three sizes and many colour options.

An official collaboration with Studiocanal, this print is part of the Ealing Comedies collection of stylish pop art prints inspired by the classic British comedy films made at Ealing Studios, featuring Art & Hue’s signature halftone style (halftone is an age-old technique that uses dots to make up the printed image, similar to newspapers or comic books).
