The Maggie poster by Art & Hue

Released as “High & Dry” in American cinemas, Ealing comedy “The Maggie” opened at the Odeon Marble Arch in London on the 25th of February 1954.

Starring Alex Mackenzie & Paul Douglas, “The Maggie” is the name of the old puffer ship skippered by Captain MacTaggart who is mistakenly engaged by an American industrialist to transport cargo.

A clash of cultures and personalities ensues when the American businessman, having learnt of his mistake, endeavours to retrieve his belongings from the cunning Scottish captain of the small boat.

Filmed on location at Islay and Crinan, the Ealing comedy was a box office draw in 1954 and was the first film role for Alex Mackenzie at the age of 61, previously a schoolteacher.
