Richard Todd Pop Art
One of British cinema’s biggest stars, Richard Todd headlined many productions, from swashbuckling epics to heroic war dramas.
Perhaps the defining role of Todd’s career was in “The Dam Busters”, regarded as one of the greatest war films in British cinema. Co-starring Michael Redgrave, John Fraser, & George Baker, the 1955 production was the most successful film in British theatres that year. The film held a Royal Charity Premiere on the 16th of May 1955 at the Odeon Leicester Square in the presence of Princess Margaret.
After military service, the Dublin-born actor was signed up by Associated British Pictures to star in their films, as well as on loan to other studios. Todd appeared in American productions & co-productions “The Hasty Heart”, “The Story of Robin Hood & His Merrie Men”, “The Sword & the Rose”, “Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue”, and “The Virgin Queen” with Bette Davis & Joan Collins.
Todd’s other film credits include “Yangste Incident” with Donald Houston, Ian Bannen, & Tsai Chin; “Never Let Go” with Peter Sellers, Elizabeth Sellars, & Adam Faith; “The Long & the Short & the Tall” with Laurence Harvey & David McCallum; and “The Longest Day” which boasted an all-star cast including Richard Burton, John Gregson, & Sean Connery.
Todd starred in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Stage Fright” with Alastair Sim & Joyce Grenfell; the Amicus production “Asylum” with Sylvia Syms, Charlotte Rampling, & Britt Ekland; the cult Italian production of “Il duo chiamato Dorian Gray” with Helmut Berger & Herbert Lom; spy-spoof “No. 1 of the Secret Service” with Aimi MacDonald; “The Big Sleep” with Harry Andrews; and “Incident at Victoria Falls” with Christopher Lee & Patrick Macnee.
