LWT

Officially opened by the Duke of Kent on the 13th of June 1972, the new home of London Weekend Television became a striking feature on London’s south bank and home to many shows.

In 1970, construction started on the site to build new studios for LWT and office space in the new tower which was called Kent House after the Duke of Kent.

Productions including Stanley Baxter’s shows and “Upstairs, Downstairs” with Gordon Jackson were filmed at the studios, along with many other shows that required a live audience, such as The Jonathan Ross Show and The Graham Norton Show.

The site has been known by many names of the years – it was originally called the South Bank Television Centre, then referred to as London Television Centre, which made for confusion with the Television Centre on Wood Lane. Also simply called LWT, it became widely known in recent years as the London Studios.

On the 30th of April 2018, ITV closed the studios and offices following the announced plan to redevelop the site.
