RIP Brian Murphy
Art & Hue wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to his widow Linda Regan and the family & friends of Brian Murphy following the news of his passing at the age of 92.
Murphy has been at the heart of British popular culture since his earliest TV appearances including “The Avengers” episode “The Springers” in 1961, and his film debut in “Sparrows Can’t Sing” starring Barbara Windsor.
Released in 1963, the Joan Littlewood production also featured Yootha Joyce who Brian would be partnered with ten years later in “Man About the House“.
Popular with audiences as the Ropers, they generated their own spin-off “George & Mildred”, still being discovered and enjoyed by new audiences to this day thanks to regular repeats. Despite George Roper’s flaws, always detailed by Mildred, Brian Murphy endeared the hapless husband to viewers.
The successful TV sitcoms lead to big-screen outings for both “Man About the House” and “George & Mildred”.
Just some of Brian Murphy’s other credits include “The Devils” with Vanessa Redgrave, “The Boyfriend” with Twiggy, “The Plank” with Diana Dors, Frankie Howerd, Kate O’Mara, Joanna Lumley, Charles Hawtrey, Harry H. Corbett & Wilfrid Hyde-White, “It’s Your Move” with Bernard Cribbins, Irene Handl & Sylvia Syms, “Dixon of Dock Green” with Jack Warner & George Innes, “L for Lester” with Amanda Barrie, “All in Good Faith” with T.P. McKenna, “Delta Wave” with Una Stubbs, and “Last of the Summer Wine” replacing Bill Owen as one of the main trio.
