Stanley Baker pop art print
Born in Ferndale in the Rhondda Valley, Stanley Baker was spotted at a young age by Ealing Studios then cast in Michael Balcon’s “Undercover” with Rachel Thomas.
Baker went on to tread the boards alongside his good friend Richard Burton and appeared in films including “Obsession” with Naunton Wayne, “Captain Horatio Hornblower” with Gregory Peck, James Robertson Justice, & Christopher Lee, “The Cruel Sea” with Meredith Edwards, “The Good Die Young” with Joan Collins, “Alexander the Great” with Richard Burton & Peter Wyngarde, “A Hill in Korea” with George Baker, “Jet Storm” with Richard Attenborough & Diane Cilento, “Hell is a City”, “Accident” with Dirk Bogarde, “The Guns of Navarone”, and “Zulu” with Michael Caine.
One of Baker’s most popular films, still regularly shown on TV, is the crime drama “Hell Drivers” with an all-star cast including Herbert Lom, Peggy Cummins, Patrick McGoohan, William Hartnell, Sid James, Gordon Jackson, David McCallum, and Sean Connery.
In 1960, Baker starred in the crime drama “The Criminal”, released in America as “The Concrete Jungle”. Screened at the Edinburgh Festival on the 28th of August 1960, the film opened at London’s Plaza on the 28th of October 1960.
In 1949, Baker first television appearance was in the adaptation of “Choir Practice”, later made into the film “Valley of Song“, which was broadcast on the 30th of July 1949 with Donald Houston and Rachel Thomas.
