Stylish pop art with the 1985 and 1966 winners France Gall & Udo Jürgens.

France Gall

France Gall won for Luxembourg with the Serge Gainsbourg song “Poupée de cire, poupée de son”. Translated as wax doll, rag doll, in French it has double meanings of vinyl babe, sound puppet, referencing the pop industry of the era.

Part of the burgeoning “yé-yé” sound of European pop music, along with Françoise Hardy and Gillian Hills, two years later Sandie Shaw won the song contest for the United Kingdom with another puppet themed entry, “Puppet on a String”.

Udo Jürgens

Austrian singer Udo Jürgens represented his country twice, in 1964 & 1965, before winning the song contest in 1966 with the song “Merci, Chérie”.

Udo’s entry in 1964 “Warum nur, warum?” so impressed the United Kingdom’s entrant that Matt Monro released his own version as “Walk Away” with English lyrics. Monro went on to record more English versions of Jürgens’ songs including his 1966 winner “Merci, Chérie”, “Without You”, “The Music Played”, “Lovin’ You Again” and “If I Never Sing Another Song”.
