New 60th anniversary 4k restoration of Darling starring Julie Christie

Shining a caustic spotlight on 60s movers-and-shakers, as well as satirical takes on the jet-set and rich, “Darling” captures London at the height of the Swinging Sixties. Starring Julie Christie as the ambitious model Diana Scott, the stylish film, with a soundtrack by Johnny Dankworth, follows her pursuit of fame, a subject that still resonates in our celebrity-obsessed culture today.
Directed by John Schlesinger (nominated for Best Director), the 1965 film (nominated for Best Picture) stars Julie Christie (who won Best Actress for her performance in the film) with Dirk Bogarde & Laurence Harvey.
Following her breakthrough role as the free-spirited Liz in “Billy Liar“, “Darling” made Julie Christie an international star and lead Life magazine to describe 1965 as “The Year of Julie Christie”.
Watching her performance in the film now, her natural talent and modernity seems to have been transplanted back into the 1960s like a time traveller.
The film secured BAFTA wins for Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde and Frederic Raphael as well as Ray Simm for Best British Art Direction.
The film premiered at the Moscow Film Festival on the 15th of July 1965 ahead of opening in American cinemas from the 3rd of August after which “Darling” held a Gala Premiere at the Plaza Cinema in London on the 16th of September 1965.
For the restoration to mark the upcoming 60th anniversary, the film was scanned in 4k using the best 35mm film elements available after which digital restorers spent over 350 hours to repair imperfections.
The release is packed full of special features including Sofia Coppola discussing the film, an interview with Oscar winner Frederic Raphael, a look at Julie Harris’ Oscar-winning costume design, excerpts from an interview with the director John Schlesinger, as well as image galleries of Behind-the-scenes stills and costumes.

Check your local cinema listings from the 30th of May for screenings of the restoration near you.
The new 4k restoration of “Darling” to mark the 60th anniversary is being released on the 16th of June, available to pre-order now at Amazon.
