The New Avengers UHD 4k

The New Avengers restored in UHD 4k

It’s time to dust off your bowler hat and practice those karate chops: “The New Avengers” are back, and looking sharper than ever in Ultra High Definition 4k.

It’s hard to overstate just how impressive Studiocanal‘s restoration of “The New Avengers” now looks in UHD 4k – Steed, Purdey & Gambit have never looked this good on TV before.

Take a look at Art & Hue’s unboxing of the new UHD 4k box-set and comparison images which demonstrate just how impressive “The New Avengers” now look.

The New Avengers restoration is available now via Amazon.

The UHD 4k is a revelation – misty childhood memories of the show are reinvigorated with the pin-sharp detail of the restoration. It’s no exaggeration to state that Steed, Purdey & Gambit have never looked this good on television before.

At the time of first broadcast, in 1976 & 1977, televisions weren’t up to the job; subsequent repeats in later years seem to get their tapes from video copies which cast everything with a green, blue or pink tinge (seemingly dependent on the colour of Purdey’s outfit); and recent satellite & freeview airings go with, shall we charitably say, “”standard” definition? (Although some airings look as if they’re streaming YouTube downloads at 480p).

Art & Hue’s previous recordings of the show from BBC Four, which may well have been a better quality than other channel offerings, although they would have been standard definition at the time, have been sadly lost with the demise of an old DVR box so the comparison images are with what’s available to view right now on contemporary channel broadcasts.

Whilst the images below attempt to demonstrate quite how different the UHD 4k restoration make The New Avengers look now, watching the newly-restored episodes with your own eyes on a 4k-capable TV from a dedicated UHD 4k Blu-ray player is seriously impressive. (Side note: it’s surprising how few UHD 4k blu-ray models there are available to buy currently; looking to upgrade from a regular blu-ray player, I went with a Panasonic model – currently reduced to £299 at Amazon – which has been doing a sterling job so far of playing “The New Avengers”).

Taking a look at two episodes for comparison, two personal favourites of The New Avengers (“Sleeper” and “Angels of Death”), the difference is striking. The images below are taken with a camera of the TV screen (so not “screenshots”) and, as obvious as the differences are, physically watching the newly-restored episodes in 4k with your own eyes is a mind-blowing experience – it bears repeating that Steed, Purdey & Gambit have never ever looked this good before.

Always surprising to see Gavin Campbell as a baddie in “Sleeper” before he joined “That’s Life!” in the 80s.

If the UHD 4k box is proving elusive (check HMV or Zavvi if Amazon don’t currently have stock), I imagine that even the regular Blu-ray and DVD box-sets will be as impactfully sharp as the UHD thanks to the incredible work that’s gone into the restoration.

Looking at the technicalities of the new box set, the 4k restoration of the entire two series of “The New Avengers” was completed at Silver Salt UK for Studiocanal. The element for the New Avengers was 35mm original negative, with each reel inspected for wear and tear, and minor repairs made, before the film was then gently cleaned. It was then scanned in 6K resolution and down-sampled to 4K for the new release.

The raw scans were restored to remove issues such as scratches and tears, taking out visible distractions, a process that took around six months to restore all 26 episodes. References were sourced for grading and experts consulted for the general look and feel so that the colour preserved the creators’ artistic vision. HDR was applied subtly to show detail in the highlights and low-lights that can be lost in standard definition.

The maze image from “Angels of Death” made a real childhood impact, as did watching Joanna Lumley fight off Caroline Munro. A fun episode, it also features Melissa Stribling, Pamela Stephenson, Lindsay Duncan, Terence Alexander (who appeared in the first ever Emma Peel episode), and The Avengers & The Professionals stalwart Michael Latimer.

The world of 1970s espionage has had a spectacular upgrade. Forget green-tinged, faded memories of the past; Studiocanal has unleashed a definitive 4K restoration of the cult classic, The New Avengers, and it’s a revelation for fans of suave spies, high kicks, and Purdey’s legendary haircut.

For the first time, the complete adventures of John Steed, Purdey, and Mike Gambit have been meticulously restored from the original 35mm negatives. This isn’t just a quick polish; it’s a six-month, frame-by-frame resurrection to remove scratches and tears, with subtle HDR grading that brings out details lost for decades.

The result means the witty, action-packed series looks more vibrant and thrilling than ever before.
