Elegant & trend-setting, Purdey‘s distinctive fashion sense left a lasting impression on popular culture, with her iconic haircut as well as her action sequences, including riding on a motorbike with her fleece-lined leather bomber jacket & personalised motorcycle helmet.
Joanna Lumley’s Purdey not only paid homage to the legacy of Honor Blackman as Dr. Cathy Gale, Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel, and Linda Thorson as Tara King, but also carried it forward, proving that the archetype of the empowered female spy was both timeless and adaptable.
Purdey’s distinctive fashion and hair became a cultural phenomenon. Her short, sleek hairstyle – created by John Frieda and often referred to simply as “the Purdey cut” – became one of the most sought-after looks of the late 1970s, influencing trends across Britain and beyond. Her wardrobe, a mix of chic yet practical outfits by designers including Catherine Buckley, Betty Jackson, and Lee Bender for Bus Stop, also embodied the era’s evolving fashion sensibilities, reinforcing the idea that all women could be both stylish and formidable.
Joanna Lumley’s impactful character in The New Avengers inspired many and led to a new perfume called “Purdey”, billed as being “made for the exciting woman of today”, as well as a fashion doll, board games, annuals, and a toy model of her iconic yellow Triumph TR7 car.
