One of the most renowned monarchs in British history, with a long reign that established stability and gave birth to the Golden Age of culture, Queen Elizabeth I was the final monarch of the House of Tudor. The daughter of King Henry VIII, Elizabeth I succeeded to the throne in 1558, after the death of her half-sister Mary I, and reigned until 1603 after which James I, the first monarch of the House of Stuart, took the throne.
