Stylish pop art print of Charles Young, part of the Gingham West collection by Art & Hue.

Born in 1864, Charles Young was the third African American graduate of the West Point U.S. military Academy (Henry Ossian Flipper was the first), who went on to because the first Black military attaché and the highest ranking African American officer in the Army until his passing in 1922.

Young broke more ground in 1903 when he was appointed the first Black national park superintendent to manage California’s Sequoia National Park.

The first Black colonel in the U.S. army, Young encountered much racism in his career, hindering his opportunities despite exemplary service, and was posthumously promoted to Brigadier General at a ceremony at West Point on the 29th of April 2022.
