From stylish tiles to curated colours, discover Claybrook paints

Firstly, to introduce Claybrook, it was founded in 2017 by Rob Whitaker, Andy Manders, and Lucy Kenna, all former directors at Fired Earth, and launched in 2018 with a stylish collection of wall and floor tiles. They’ve expanded their ranges to include paints, which naturally coordinate perfectly with their tiles, and, more recently, baths and basins. With shops in London’s Shoreditch and on the King’s Road, Claybrook also have a studio in Banbury, Oxfordshire, where you can explore their range of tiles and bathroom collections.

They clearly have a keen design eye for picking out key looks that look great alongside current contemporary trends but which also aren’t going to date. Their timeless selection of paint colours is a case in point; they may not have the largest amount of colours available compared to other larger paint brands but what they do have is a tight edit of curated and desirable colours to fall in love with.
Incidentally, Claybrook are clearly having fun when it comes to naming their paints; a small sampling of paint names that made Art & Hue smile include Kate Blush (a beautiful plaster pink tone named after the singer/songwriter), Patsy Stone (a stone colour named after the iconic fash mag editor from Absolutely Fabulous), and Sweeney Brown (a deep 70s brown after the cop series with John Thaw & Dennis Waterman). There’s even a colour called Plaster Cast, inspired by the Ashmolean Museum‘s exhibits in Oxford, and a beautiful terrazzo tile called Kajagoogoo Limahl.
Claybrook’s yellow tones, such as Larkhill, Lemon Squeezy & Mellow Mustard, are all unique from each other yet would coordinate well, in the same room or across a home. Likewise their neutrals mix beautifully with their blues, teals and pinks.
As an example, take a look at the grouping below featuring just some of Claybrook’s warm tones; ranging from the palest to the deepest, it’s seriously tempting to paint the entire house in this one chromatic scale of complex hues. Moving from warm skin tones through to deep terracottas and browns, it’s a simple way of coordinating the entire house without having to give too much time and thought to picking out colours.

That doesn’t mean the initial concept of yellow, pink & aqua (and not forgetting the all important touches of bright orange) can’t be incorporated but, rather than painting the walls in the brights, they can be in the art prints, the lamps, and other pieces.

To see how they play together, Art & Hue couldn’t resist dropping in some pop art (quickly & roughly) into Claybrook’s images of their wall colours, as well as adding bubbly Barbara Windsor in a bubble bath into one of their photographs of their tiles and freestanding bath.
To explore Claybrook’s full range of paint colours, as well as to discover their stylish baths and tiles (Art & Hue is in love with their terrazzo tiles, as well as their glossy Zellige-style porcelain tiles, which will be firmly in mind when time – and budget – allows to renovate the kitchen and bathrooms), visit their website here.
