Elegant, trend-setting, and with a mean kick, Purdey would always know what to do in any given situation.

Purdey’s distinctive fashion sense left a lasting impression on popular culture, with her iconic haircut as well as her action sequences, including riding on a motorbike with her fleece-lined leather bomber jacket & personalised motorcycle helmet.

Purdey’s ballet training brought elegant power to The New Avengers‘ fight scenes with Joanna Lumley’s impactful character.

Joanna Lumley’s Purdey not only paid homage to the legacy of Honor Blackman as Dr. Cathy Gale, Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel, and Linda Thorson as Tara King, but also carried it forward, proving that the archetype of the empowered female spy was both timeless and adaptable.

Purdey’s individual fashion and hair became a cultural phenomenon. Her short, sleek hairstyle – created by John Frieda and often referred to simply as “the Purdey cut” – became one of the most sought-after looks of the late 1970s, influencing trends across Britain and beyond.

Her wardrobe, a mix of chic yet practical outfits by designers including Catherine Buckley, Betty Jackson, and Lee Bender for Bus Stop, also embodied the era’s evolving fashion sensibilities, reinforcing the idea that all women could be both stylish and formidable.

Joined by the stylish Purdey and dashing Mike Gambit, “The New Avengers” returned with a whole new look, tone, and even theme tune. Rather than re-use the title theme from “The Avengers”, composer & producer Laurie Johnson took one element of the original music for the opening bars and then went on to create a whole new sound for the Seventies spies.

During a time of questionable seventies taste and saucy films, Steed, Purdey & Gambit were a blast of stylish sophistication and wit which amassed fans smitten by their sheer cool whilst battling diabolical masterminds in “The New Avengers“.

Making its world premiere on Irish station RTÉ on the 28th of September 1976, The New Avengers’ British debut was on the HTV channel at 7.50pm on the 17th of October 1976, then broadcast on the Thames channel on the 19th ahead of other ITV networks on the 22nd. The show revived Patrick Macnee‘s character John Steed from The Avengers and introduced Joanna Lumley as Purdey (named after a British gunmaker) & Gareth Hunt as Gambit.

Each print is a heartfelt homage to the show’s unique blend of action, wit, and retro flair, reimagined in Art & Hue’s signature pop art style.
