Believed by some to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Bass Reeves was the first African American deputy marshal of the American West. Throughout his long & distinguished career, Reeves arrested more than 3,000 fugitives.

Born into slavery in 1838, Bass gained his freedom during the American Civil War then lived with Native American tribes, learning their languages.

Bass’ career as a Marshal ran from 1875 until 1907 until state agencies assumed law enforcement, at which point Reeves joined the Oklahoma Police Department for two years until illness forced early retirement.

David Oyelowo will be portraying Bass Reeves in the upcoming “1883” series as a prequel to “Yellowstone”.

Bass Reeves has rightly achieved legendary status having served with a career of 32 years as the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshal in the West.
