Liz Tilberis
As the editor of British Vogue, Liz Tilberis kickstarted the birth of the supermodel phenomenon at the start of the 90s. Liz put the now-iconic image of five models, photographed on the streets of New York by Peter Lindberg 35 years ago in 1989, on the cover of the January 1990 issue of British Vogue which heralded the supermodel era.
The five models on the iconic cover were seen by George Michael who asked them to appear in the video for “Freedom 90” and introduced “the supers” to MTV audiences globally. Nicknamed Supermodels, these were fashion Superstars who became known by the first names – Linda, Naomi, Christy, Cindy, & Tatjana, and thanks to the supermodels, the world’s attention was drawn to fashion, arguably more than ever before or since.
Having joined British Vogue as an intern in 1967, taking over as editor in 1988, Liz left the magazine to become the editor of Harper’s Bazaar in 1992. She went on to rewrite the look of fashion editorials with the help of creative director Fabien Baron.
The striking photography coupled with Baron’s unique typography was highly influential, even inspiring the refreshed titles of the classic TV sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous“, and garnered Liz with a special achievement CFDA award presented by Princess Diana in 1995.
In her final years, Liz Tilberis became the first President of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, now named the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance and still working on fund-raising for research, awareness, and patient support programmes.
