Eddy Merckx
The Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx is generally considered to be the most successful rider in the history of competitive cycling.

He won the French Tour in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, & 1974, as well as the Italian Giro in 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, & 1974, plus the Vuelta a Espana in 1973.

Eddy Merckx is one of only three riders to have won all five cycling “Monuments”, (Milan–San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and the Giro di Lombardia), and the only cyclist to have won them all twice or more.

Following retirement from the sport on the 18th May 1978, Eddy Merckx stayed in the cycling world when he launched his own bicycle brand in 1980.

He went on to coach the Belgian national cycling team for eleven years until 1996 and, in 2001, he helped establish the Tour of Qatar and the Tour of Oman, both of which he still organises.
