Gracie Fields stylish pop art print.

Born above a chip shop in Rochdale, Gracie Fields captivated audiences in theatres, music halls, and cinemas for years with her down-to-earth comedy and cheerful or emotional songs. During the Second World War, she raised morale by entertaining the troops.

Consistently regarded as one of Britain’s most popular stars, her busy theatre and music hall career led to film.

Whilst never a fan of the medium, as she preferred to perform to live audiences, she would go on to appear in many successful productions including “Sally in Our Alley”, “Looking on the Bright Side”, “This Week of Grace”, “Sing As We Go”, “Look Up & Laugh”, “Queen of Hearts”, “The Show Goes On”, “Keep Smiling”, “Shipyard Sally”, “Stage Door Canteen”, “Molly & Me”, to name a few.

Opening at London’s Rialto Cinema on the 25th of March 1934, “Love, Life & Laughter” sees Gracie playing a pub landlord’s daughter who falls in love with a European Prince.

Music for the film is by Earnest Irving, who scored previous films with Gracie as well as George Formby, the other big box office draw of the era, and would later compose for the classic Ealing comedies “Whisky Galore”, “A Run For Your Money”, “His Excellency”, and “Kind Hearts & Coronets”. The film marked the screen debut of George Sanders.

Art & Hue had the pleasure to delve into the archives of the film “Love, Life & Laughter” to create this stylish pop art print of Dame Gracie Fields, in three sizes & 20 colours.
