Barbara Feldon
As Agent 99, Barbara Feldon proved far more capable a spy than the bumbling Max Smart and was at the forefront of independent female characters on American television.
It’s perhaps worth noting that the spy parody “Get Smart” debuted on the 18th of September 1965 and it wouldn’t be until the 28th of March 1966 that American audiences were first introduced to Mrs Emma Peel in The Avengers.
Barbara also appeared in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” with Robert Vaughn & David McCallum, and in 1995 “Get Smart” was revived with Barbara Feldon returning to the character of Agent 99 as a Congresswoman.
With guest-stars including Barbara Bain, the complete series is available as a box-set from Amazon and can be streamed in America at iTunes.
